i came across some articles about ruffa's younger brother - richard gutierrez. geez, the pattern of gimmickry this family uses is too obvious even for a regular "patay gutom" - or am i expecting too much?
1) as spokesperson and greenpeace activist: when one really supports a cause, one need not publicize such an act for the sake of getting nationwide coverage of what you believe in. you do your act without asking for a pat on your shoulders.

2) on hollywood dreams: only in the philippines can one boasts of "hollywood" recognition even when they are not really part of the movie production itself. passing it on as an "achievement" is a tell-tale sign of "riding" on someone else's accomplishments. i don't think the movie mentioned here got recognition because of the "actors" - it got recognition because of the storyline, its direction and cinematography. but of richard's acting? nah!
oh yes, it's too obvious that richard is hoping he'd get a little "exposure" in hollywood by meeting the new cast - remember how good this family at namedropping for the sake of building up their image(s) among the "patay gutom"? just wait and see ...

i'd say thay all this is nothing but PR-tricks. this gutierrez clan will stop at nothing to "hug" the local entertainment scene. now that ruffa's stinking business is out in the open, their PR-machinery is now sending the "boy-next-door"-son to "retrieve" the gutierrez place in the local tabloids.
Ruffa = OUT of the limelight (at least silent for a while)
Richard = IN into the showbiz circus (he's fresh and likely to build up the gutierrez "tarnished" image)
Raymond = WHO?
Annabelle Rama = WILL always be around (raking in commissions from the earnings of her darling investments)
Eddie Gutierrez = WHO and WHAT his role in this family todate remain a mystery to me
what a bunch! it's an interesting bunch ... the shrill thrill of this family is all about showbusiness ... the taste of dough and the high of its perks has gone to their heads and drowned every ounce of their "sanity" to choose right over wrong. but hey, there's nothing wrong with the "dough" - for as long as you "chew" them right. who wouldn't want a bit of that crazy crunch to munch?

hmmm....truly doubt if The matron of this scavenging family can spell that word: activism. Pa-goodboy effect muna dahil he's got that 'image' to protect or else, in the very unstable world of showbiz were good looking newbies area dime a dozen. the lifesty they know will fade away just like that. Sooner, either of the matrona's kids will do sex-oriented films once again like the Dad Eddie did when no offers came. Its an easy choice, pimping is normal for them.

I will say this-- I have never come across this movie before till now & I have been an Asian film enthusiast for sometime.
what's more-- VERTIGO ENTERTAINEMNT-- DID NOT MAKE THE DEPARTED AKA:HK'S INFERNAL AFFAIRS. DEPARTED WAS MADE UNDER THE BANNER OF WARNER BROS/BRAD PITT'S FILM'S COMPANY & MEDIA ASIA-- THE Hk film co that brought out Infernal.
I wish they get their facts right.
departed had a budget of over US$70 mil & sigaw only have $5 mil ?? that's nothing-- for HW big budget movies-- they spend more for catering wh can be around 7-10 mil-- no kidding.. shocked me too when I heard it.
in other words-- this is remade-- it will be very very low budget movie.
an average low budget HW film is now around 35-40 mil-- if it has studio backing.
yu do the math what kind of film this remake is going to be at $5 mil.
gee.. warner's/pitt paid $1.7 mil for the rights to Infernal Affairs.
don't think this vertigo have this kind of money.
On that HW remake -
more an indie film budget dont you think? The kind where the director hopes to score on the acting & the very limited set.
But you see for Rama's they're translating it to x50 for peso equivalent, so...Big budget siya, LMFAO. As if they'd get any at all.
HW i tink is experiementing on adopting genres & stories, lost na kasi ang orginality minsan eh. They turned to adopting & remaking storylines from Jap & Korean movies hoping for a new angle.
Either way, them braggarts aint involved in it so why? Ok the boy was in it...but many actors where in the Jap version of the Ring too and I truly doubt they ever let people know as much as these clowns are doing as if they are central to the HW adoptation. Ano yan, just grasping on air to pull out any publicity?
Cesar Montano's and a few other Pinoy actor's stint on that Benjamin Bratt and James Franco starrer was far more worthy of all the brouhaha they are creating. After all, the budget for that movie was standard HW and they actually 'starred', acted and worked on the set.

Marami namang Pinoy merong parts ah, there's this Fil-am actress with a recurring role in ER before. Wasnt Leah Salonga with a recurring role for 2 years in a big american Soap?
Yari Torres (kahit di siya Pinay but I thought I should just say it here) was the star of a TeleNovela in a US Network production. I think it was Watch Over me. She was also spokesperson for WalMart's Metro 7 line, and her hubby was stolen from her by Jlo. hehehe---she shut up though and remains ever so private about that. How about Joey Mead, the Pinay model Vjay (also guested on Ruffa's RPN-9 defunct PNTP) who was spokesperson for Head & Shoulders America? We dont hear about her.

I stand corrected though-- this Vertigo was involved with Departed-- except this company was one of many involved..the ones that stood out for me was warner's & Pitt's Plan b prod --he formed with ex-wife Jen.
yeah, $5 mil is a very cheap indie film--but I wish this Flip director Yam very well.I hope he succeeds. It looks like Vertigo is fond of 'buying' up Asian films to be remade for HW-- like the Ring & Grudge.
The Great Raid was never released here at the cinemas- but it's always showing on cable as it is right now. i WATCHED IT-- The flip actors hardly had scenes-- even lines-- the main event were of course the story line about Americans hence heavy on the Am actors..I noticed from Flip press there they keep writing about this movie like it's in a very big deal-- but here it's just another movie on cable.
here, working in Hollywood is just a job-- until one gets a real big break-- otherwise,it's a long, hard slog.
Right now-- as far as Asians go making a huge stir-- coming directly from So East Asia is Maggie Q-Viet/Irish grew up in Hawaii but made her name in Hong Kong films & modelling-- she got her break in Mission Impossible 3( glorified extra but she got huge billing & it's Tom Cruise) ,now- she's in Live Free or diehard with Willis-- she does better min this-- she's got several HW films coming out.
I like Maggie, I can see why they use her-- she's got that Exotic look- without being too Asian--she's got a great ,slim figure, not too tall 5'6 --( Ruffa is too big! lol!!!) to dwarf most HW leading men who are short..& she can kick ass-- GREAT FOR ACTION FILMS. She's also modest-she knows the scoop working here.smart girl! & only in her 20's.She's the one to watch.Not everyone can be like Zhang Ziyi or Gong Li, who are heavy duty actors.
This Richard said-- he'd like to visit the set of this Echo & see how HW films are made-- ha.. ha.. not from that film--that will be a very cheap production.Everything here is a pecking order-- which includes the crew working in them.The best ones are the big budget ones with very expensive catering-- the food offered will be like a 4 stars restaurant!
the only one who was close to really hit the big time was tia carrere-- she got her huge breaks from Wayne's world then plucked by Sean connery no less for rising sun,then followed up with true Lies with Arnold.
Tia is very pretty( at least when I worked with her), has a gift for languages-- or she can fake any accent easily.Not a heavy weight-- but she could have really hit the A-list if she didn't start doing a lot of B-movies--becoming progressively inane until her films just ended up direct to video--SHE LOST HER PLACE iN HW FOOD CHAIN. very silly!
now, she cannot even get arrested. she's doing a recurring role in some series for HBO. this is a let-down after her breaks..
it's not enough to get t he breaks-- it's what you do with it afterwards-- make or break time. Lucy Lui-- not even as pretty as tia but a more substantial actress & smarter fared better.And made a bomb from those Charlie's Angels films! She's taken seriously.Now, Maggie Q is doing where she left off in action films.
Tia-- she married an Arab,too-- this case Lebanese-- when they divorced? her career was also down the loo-- she tried to jump start with a Playboy spread-- shoot! that didn't do anything for her.Most she did was 'dancing with the stars'!
anyway, as far as 'looks' go-- Tia & ruffa are very much alike--though tia is morena & older-- but if a role is needed for this look? they will choose Tia-- whose known & already HW experienced! plus, she speaks very fluent english!!!
ce ce-- you mentioned Eddie gutierrez & his role in this clan--it's really quite a let down. He maybe a nice man-- but I think his character is weak-- is it any wonder why Rama got her claws in him? !!

I saw a real Filipnia on set of a teen sit com--forgot her name- she's very cute,too. I think raised in US --the network execs I spoke to were very enthused about her. she even came on set with her Flip family-- but this series wasn't a hit-- don't know what happened to her. Instead,next I knew- Jessica Alba became the young darling-- the starlet t o watch-- they're the same age range-- & Alba is pure Latina.
the ones wo are really making it in Hollywood are the chinese( & they still keep bitching!)Koreans-- now even Vietnamese & thais--the Phil is maily 'lost' in this shuffle! what happened???? supposedly-- Flips can speak english instead HW would rather hire dialogue coaches to them to learn english & their lines.
Most of these HK actors like simon Yam (Tomb Raider) Anthony Wong(Painted Veil) get into A-list movies-- & their English isn't even that good.I won't even get into chow Yun Fat-- whose on a different league.
The fact is-- their actors are so damn good!Their films are world-class..when to think-- it wasn't always like this for them.But they learnt & they did it quickly! Their directors are first class--like wong Kar Wai, Johnny to, Ang Lee ,John Woo, etc--when they got their technique & inspiration from western films!
they come to Hollywood with big fat contracts!
anyway, I expected this to happen to Phil film makers ages ago-- now, we're even behind vietnam , Korea, thailand( Ong Bak etc-- Tony Jaa brought them in the world map) when they just got going in world market.

ok .. I will give this vignette about chow Yun Fat--I got t o work on Replacement Killers-- his first HW film-- when the AD told us who the star was-- one of the biggest stars in the world? I wasn't impressed-- never heard of him I blurted out loud-- lol..Chow who?? what a name-- who'd like to be called Fat anyway!
I still have to watch my first HK film.
Later, he appeared in costume-- I checked him out-- he is tall, brown skin-- what we'd call dark moreno, good looking enough I thought-- but what is the big deal???? I thought there were better mestizo actors in Phil...

I will add this though-- with due fairness: when I lived in London-- Brit ch 4 used to show the films of Lino brocka?? & he was taken seriously by Brit critics.
But I believe he died of AIDS? right? since, I haven't heard or seen anything Flip-- mind you though his films were rather depressing usually the setting was that 'smoky mountain' & the slums-- so Brits assumed this is/was mostly what Manila was about.
Filipinos are talented...but...with the way we rake the muck back home...I dont see an HW link for Pinoy Actors & Cinema anytime soon. I hope the Echo director does well, I really do. He doesnt need the Gutierrezes clicnging on to him though. Theyre leeches.

If I seem tough critiquing Flip films/actors-- I am because I do expect more from Flips! Esp after getting into Asian cinema.. But how I noticed the quality of entertainment there lower than when we left it. It's like on a time warp fr the 60's! mostly so corny!

Gong Li-- talk about being sUCH A miscast-- she was in Miami Vice. that role could have been done by a Flip actress if all they wanted was some Asian/lATIN actress.Originally, that role was written for JUST a Latina actress-- but Michael Mann the director was so keen to work with Gong ,so he changed it to chinese/lATINA-- problem is/was she still couldn't look Latin!@& one subtitles to even figure out what t he hell she was saying-- didn't matter though.
She's such a highly revered Chinese actress ,her reputation precedes her--all these A-list top directors are clamouring to work with her-- even if it means re-writing the script to give room for her race.THE WAY TO GO!

If she couldn't break into hollywood when she was young and in her prime, why would she think she can break in now that she's gurang. My gosh!!! Did you guys see the article in PEP today about her new movie Desperadas? Obvious naman na kinailangan haluan ang movie ng younger at juicy pang actress like Mariann Rivera and Iza Calzado. Basta kami ng tribe ko dito ay boycott pa rin ang anything that has Gutierrez in it. :D

MeAnwhile, I read interviews given by the 2 guys who bought this film in the HW tradepapers-- said they liked Yam's work--in this film it reminded them of Stanley Kubrick-- so they want to check him out & see what he can do with different venue. why they hired him to direct. no mention of RICHY RICH.!
And Yam got some experience from england-- that's good! The Brits are very good-- I should know-- I worked with t hem,too.

I find this film used PHIL Locales better than the couple of Flip films I saw on TFC-as I checked how Phil films are now compared to HK.
this is not the greatest film-- but good enough.Louis have gained more acting chops since-he's getting very good. see him in Election 2 directed by Johnny To.

the location shoot is partly in New York I think for exterior shots-- then canada(toronto) for interiors--wh means they built the sets in some old warehouse there--& using it as a studio of sorts.they're also using Canada bec it's cheaper to do so-- their very low budget will stretch more--& the tax breaks for producers.
Yap, I've seen enough of these sort of productions & even worked in some of them long time ago. ( THAT WAS EVEN IN la) & day-- compared to a real Hollywood feature.

with that Wcho budget of 5 mil-- it makes 10 mil-- it'll be consider a success-- as they earned their investment back-- but still in red-- it will need about 15 to make a profit.
then there's Martin & his perfume??? geez! he never even made it to appear on the Tonight Show w/ Leno--wh is a clear sign when a performer is making it in Vegas.Martin was just another singer doing the rounds in Vegas-- nothing more.
thus far-only Filipino to make it to the real big time is Lea Salonga! She's become a true world class performer--with her? the Flips can be proud of-- she's seriously talented, disciplined, no nonesense-- sensible & she delivers.what's more-- she often works with equally world class & famous performers-- way to go! and she does have star quality.
so far-- direct from phil? she's the ony I've really heard of to make it.

the real ones being recognised are the chinese-- from Hk & Mainland-- with them-- hollywood really sat up & took notice-- yet even then--from CYun fat, zhang Ziyi--Jet--etc they complain Hollywood isn't giving them real good roles-- but that is changing fast.
Tony Jaa made a real splash with Ong Bak-- & KoreAn films are HOT! HW cannot wotk fast enough to remake their films.Honng kong films are so well- recognised now--their films get showings in all the huge film fest-- world wide--like cannes.
these guys come in from their countries-- they already have studio backed projects to work on.
the new kids getting recognised are the viets-- & thais-- HW love their films..
so in perspective to them-- Echo is still not much. but it's a start.
as for this Josh Harnett film-must be about the Vientnam war-- & this would be a major feature w/ easily 80 mil budget--but this is still nothing. some are even 120 mil--anyway using davao as location??? it means they cannot find it in vietnam anymore-- as that country is so fast developing(same with thailand)--& Phil does have the same terrain as vietnam --it will do.
but I believe this film will have a Korean director, & viet leading Lady-- & use some of locals for extras, wh s smething HW film productions do a lot to give work & some fun.
